Op de vraag "What do you do when the animal just "doesn't do" the behavior? Do
you change the criteria or do you address the variables? Or in the
real-world, is that a judgement call?" schreef Bob Bailey, een naam die iedereen zou moeten kennen, het volgende schitterende antwoord:

"If "doesn't do" happens more than a few times a day, the trainer selects the
hardest wall around and bangs his or her head hard three times. It meant
that you did not give enough info to ask for that behavior in that way.
That is the trainers way of accepting the responsibility of teaching.
Animals can learn anything within their physical, mental, and emotional
limits, given enough time. By trial and error it may take hours, days, weeks
or even longer, but the animal will eventually "dope it out." The question
really is can we teach the animal efficiently so it does not take hours,
days, or longer. If you plan carefully your route to the behavior you want,
each step will be simple and quickly mastered. "Doesn't do" shouldn't happen
very often. When it does, bang head, back up, and try again, but be a
little smarter. When I am teaching students in my "chicken training"
classes I tell them "you are bigger, you are stronger, and you are smarter
than the chicken....and two out of three is not too bad." What can I say
here? <smile>.

Let me wax a little philosophical here, and say what I tell dog trainers
when they start explaining to me how tough it is to train dogs. Except for
the most extreme behaviors we might comprehend, we seldom push the animals
we train physically or mentally. I have a good part of my life in the wild
watching various animals, dolphins, whales, coyotes, ravens, and on and on,
do some truly remarkable complex behaviors, far beyond what trainers ask of
their animals, and not a trainer in sight. The animals did what they had to
do to solve the problem. Mother Nature gave the animals problems to solve,
and the equipment with which to solve the problem. When an animal did not
succeed, the consequences were sometime catastrophic, at the very least they
did not eat or find a mate. The point is that animals are built to solve
problems. Our task is the define the problem clearly, make sure that the
animal has the tools to solve the problem, and make it worthwhile for the
animal to solve the problem you present. Remember, it is YOUR problem, and
it is up to you to make it worthwhile for the animal to want to solve YOUR
problem - we sometimes call that "motivation." What can we do to make
training worthwhile for all participants, so everyone gets something out of
it? When we figure that out, it is remarkable how much easier our training
becomes."
