......These ossifications are the result of nature responding to everonmental influences and stress. Interestingly enough, studies indicate that the ossification itself does not produce pain - it is rather the cause of the ossification that is responsible. Deformed hoof syndrome, due to imbalance and loss of proper physiological function, causes excessive strain and stress on het various cartilages and ligaments, resulting in pain.
The central nervous system reacts to this pahology by sending bone- producing cells called ostheophytes to the site in an effort to stabilize the over-stressed area. Returning proper structure and function to the foot stricken with deformed hoof syndrome wil spur nature, via the central nervous system, to respond to the pathology in a positive manner. Over time, bone -eroding cells, called osteoclasts, will aid in bone reduction, helping to return proper joint function.
Patience is the rule of thumb.
Bone remodeling is a long-term proces which can be hastened up by a return to proper dynamic structure. Removal of the primary cause (imbalance and stresses) will aid in returning soundness to the horse suffering ossifications.
